ประเทศไทยมีการศึกษาพยายามที่จะหาวิธีการปรับปรุงคุณภาพของถ่านหินให้มีประสิทธิภาพในการผลิตพลังงานได้เพิ่มขึ้น เนื่องจากถ่านหินเป็นแหล่งพลังงานที่มีต้นทุนค่อนข้างต่ำ อีกทั้งเป็นแหล่งพลังงานที่มีปริมาณสะสมมากเพียงพอที่จะนำมาแปรรูปเป็นพลังงานให้เราได้ใช้กัน ซึ่งในการศึกษาการจำแนกลักษณะทางธรณีวิทยาของถ่านหินนี้จะทำให้เราสามารถพัฒนาและปรับปรุงระบบในการนำพลังงานจากถ่านหินมาใช้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและปลอดภัยได้ในอนาคต
การศึกษาในครั้งนี้ดำเนินการขึ้นเพื่อศึกษาเกี่ยวกับ การทบทวนเอกสาร: เรื่องการจำแนกลักษณะของตัวอย่างทางธรณีวิทยาของถ่านหิน ศึกษาโดยการรวบรวมข้อมูลเอกสารงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2547 – 2557 และเลือกงานวิจัยที่น่าสนใจ ภาษาไทยจำนวน 5 ฉบับ ภาษาอังกฤษจำนวน 5 ฉบับ รวมเป็น 10 ฉบับ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ปัจจัยที่นิยมทำการวิเคราะห์ได้แก่ ความชื้นของถ่านหิน,องค์ประกอบทางเคมีของถ่านหิน, ค่าความร้อนของถ่านหิน ซึ่งการศึกษาปัจจัยข้างต้นเพื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์คุณภาพของถ่านหินว่าเป็นถ่านหินที่มีคุณภาพดีหรือไม่ และปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพของถ่านหินมี 2 ปัจจัยคือ1. ความลึกของชั้นหิน และเวลาทางธรณีวิทยา 2.ความผิดปกติของโครงสร้าง จะเห็นได้ว่าลักษณะโครงสร้างหรือแหล่งของถ่านหินมีผลต่อคุณภาพและองค์ประกอบของถ่านหินดังการศึกษาของ National Coal Quality Inventory (NaCQI)ที่สรุปว่าถ่านหินในแต่ละภูมิภาคจะมีลักษณะที่เฉพาะแตกต่างกันไป
