ประเพณีบุญซำฮะของประเทศลาวจัดทำขึ้นเพื่อชำระเสนียดจัญไรที่เกิดขึ้นกับบ้านเมืองในปีที่ผ่านมา หรือชำระล้างสิ่งสกปรกทั้งทางด้านร่างกายและจิตใจให้ไร้มลทิน ประเพณีนี้จัดติดต่อกัน 3 วัน
เมื่อถึงวันงานชาวบ้านจะนำดอกไม้ธูปเทียน ขันน้ำขันใส่กรวดทราย และฝ้ายผูกแขนมารวมตัวกันที่ลานประกอบพิธีในตอนเย็นจะมีการทำบุญ นิมนต์พระสงฆ์มาสวดเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคล พอเช้าวันใหม่จะมีการทำบุญ ถวายสังฆทาน พระสงฆ์รดน้ำมนตร์ จากนั้นมีการสาดกรวดทรายไปทั่วหมู่บ้าน สุดท้ายคนในหมู่บ้านจะร่วมกันทำความสะอาดบริเวณบ้านและที่สาธารณะให้สะอาดเรียบร้อย เพื่อขับไล่สิ่งอัปมงคลทั้งหลายให้หมดสิ้นไป
