คณะมนตรีได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 21 พฤศจิกายน 2499 ให้วันที่ 16 มกราคมของทุกปีเป็น วันครู โดยถือเอาวันที่ประกาศพระราชบัญญัติครูในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เมื่อวันที่ 16 มกราคม พ.ศ.2488 เป็น วันครู และให้กระทรวงศึกษาธิการสั่งการให้นักเรียนและครูหยุดในวันดังกล่าว
