๑. พยัญชนะที่ไม่ปรากฏสระใดประกอบให้เข้าใจว่ามีเสียงสระ อะ อยู่ด้วย ให้อ่านออกเสียงเหมือนมีสระ อะ ประกอบ ไม่ต้องอ่านออกเสียง อะ เต็มเสียงนัก เพราะ อะ เป็นสระเสียงสั้น (รัสสะ) และเป็นเสียงเบา (ลหุ) เช่น สรณํ อ่านออกเสียงว่า สะ-ระ-ณัง

๒. พยัญชนะที่มีจุด (พินทุ) อยู่ข้างล่าง แสดงว่าพยัญชนะตัวนั้นเป็นตัวสะกด ห้ามออกเสียง เช่น

พหุปฺปเทหิ อ่านออกเสียงว่า พะ-หุป-ปะ-เท-หิ (ห้ามออกเสียงว่า พะ-หุ-ปะ-ปะ-เท-หิ)

อุณฺณานาภี อ่านออกเสียงว่า อุณ-ณา-นา-ภี (ห้ามออกเสียงว่า อุ-ณะ-ณา-นา-ภี)

เมตฺตํ อ่านออกเสียงว่า เมต-ตัง

คำอื่นๆ ก็เช่นเดียวกัน

๓. ถ้าพยัญชนะที่อยู่ข้างหน้าพยัญชนะตัวที่มีจุด ไม่ประกอบด้วยสระใดๆ ให้อ่านออกเสียงดุจไม้หันอากาศในภาษาไทย เช่น

ปฏิกฺกมนฺตุ อ่านออกเสียงว่า ปะ-ฏิก-กะ-มัน-ตุ

วิรูปกฺเขหิ อ่านออกเสียงว่า วิ-รู-ปัก-เข-หิ

สตฺตา อ่านออกเสียงว่า สัต-ตา

๔. เฉพาะพยัญชนะ ๔ ตัวนี้ คือ ย ร ล ว ถ้าอยู่หลังพยัญชนะตัวอื่น ให้ออกเสียงผสมกับพยัญชนะตัวหน้า โดยออกเสียงควบกล้ำกัน อย่าออกให้เต็มเสียง เช่น

ฉพฺยาปุตฺเตห อ่านออกเสียงว่า ฉัพ-พยา-ปุต-เต-หิ

ภทฺราน อ่านออกเสียงว่า ภัท-ทรา-นิ

อินฺทฺริยานิ อ่านออกเสียงว่า อิน-ทริ-ยา-นิ

วากฺยํ อ่านออกเสียงว่า วาก- กยัง

เสียง พ ซึ่งเป็นตัวสะกดในคำแรก กับ ย ให้ออกเสียงควบกล้ำกัน คือ คล้ายๆ จะออกเป็น ฉัพะยา คือคล้ายกับ เสียง พ ทำหน้าที่เป็นตัวสะกดด้วย และแบ่งเสียงไปควบกับ ย ด้วย แม้คำอื่นๆ ก็เช่นเดียวกัน

๕. จุดโปร่ง หรือ นิคคหิต (อํ) จัดเป็นพยัญชนะตัวหนึ่งในภาษาบาลี ประกอบกับสระ อะ อิ อุ คือ อํ อึ อุ 

ออกเสียงเป็น อัง อิง อุง

เช่น สรณํ หึสิ กาตุ  อ่านออกเสียงเป็น สะระณัง หิงสิ กาตุง ตามลำดับ

๖. ส มีเสียงคล้าย ตัว s ในภาษาอังกฤษ และแม้เป็นตัวสะกด ก็ให้ออกเสียงได้เล็กน้อย เช่น

กสฺมา อ่านออกเสียงว่า กัสะมา

ตสฺมา อ่านออกเสียงว่า ตัสะมา

๗. พยัญชนะ ย ที่ซ้อนหน้าตัวเอง ในคำว่า อาหุเนยฺโย ปาหุเนยฺโย ทกฺขิเณยฺโย เสยฺโย วิญฺเญยฺยํ วฑฺเฒยฺยํ ให้อ่านออกเสียงคล้าย อัยยะ ห้ามออกเสียง เป็น เอยยะ เช่น

อาหุเนยฺโย อ่านออกเสียงว่า อา-หุ-ไนย-โย

ปาหุเนยฺโย อ่านออกเสียงว่า ปา-หุ-ไนย-โย

วิญฺเญยฺยํ อ่านออกเสียงว่า วิญ-ไญย-ยัง เป็นต้น

๘. คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย ตฺวา ตฺวาน ให้ออกเสียงตัว ต สะกด และออกเสียงตัว ต นั้นอีกกึ่งเสียง เช่น

กตฺวา อ่านออกเสียงว่า กัต - ตวา

กตฺวาน อ่านออกเสียงว่า กัต - ตวา - นะ

คเหตฺวา อ่านออกเสียงว่า คะ-เหต- ตวา

สริตฺวา อ่านออกเสียงว่า สะ-ริต-ตวา
