ประวัติวันฮาโลวีน
ในคริสต์ศาสนา นิกายคาทอลิก Halloween เป็นคำภาษาอังกฤษ เพี้ยนมาจากคำ All Hallows Eves ซึ่งแปลว่า วันก่อนวันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลาย โดยวิธีตัดต่อ Hallow + Eve = Halloween คำว่า Hallow เป็นคำแองโกลแซกซัน แปลว่า ทำให้ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ตรงกับภาษาเยอรมันว่า heiligen ในปัจจุบันนิยมใช้คำมาจากภาษาละตินว่า sanctify คำว่า Hallow ยังมีใช้ในบทสวดอธิษฐานเก่า ๆ เช่น Hallowed be thy Name (ขอพระนามจงเป็นที่สักการะ)

คำว่า Hallow ยังแปลว่า สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ผู้ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ นักบุญ ดังนั้น All Hallowmas จึงแปลว่า วันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลาย ในปัจจุบันใช้คำว่า All Saints Day คู่กับ Christmas ซึ่งแปลว่า วันสมโภชพระคริสต์หรือคริสต์มาสนั่นเอง

วันก่อนวันสมโภชคริสต์มาสมี Christmas Eve ที่นิยมเรียกว่า คืน (ก่อน) คริสต์มาส วันก่อนวันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลายก็มี All Hallowmas Eve ซึ่งต่อมาย่อเป็น Halloween โดยมีงานรื่นเริงและพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาเช่นเดียวกับคืนคริสต์มาส ชาวคาทอลิกพร้อมใจกันเลื่อนพิธีกรรมทางศาสนาไป หลังวันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลาย และเรียกว่า วันวิญญาณในแดนชำระ (All Souls Day) เพื่อให้คู่กับวันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลาย (All Saints Day)
