ขาโถกเถกเป็นกีฬาพื้นบ้านของภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ  นิยมเล่นกันมากในจังหวัดสกลนคร  ศรีษะเกษ  บุรีรัมย์  และนครราชสีมา  บางท้องถิ่นเรียกว่าเดินโถกเถก  คำว่า  โถกเถก  หมายถึง  ไม้ที่ต่อขาสำหรับเดิน  กีฬาขาโถกเถกสันนิษฐานว่ามีการเล่นมานานแล้ว  แต่ไม่สามารถหาหลักฐานมาอ้างอิงได้  แต่อย่างน้อยพบว่า  มีการเล่นกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชการที่  ๖  ในสมัยนั้นเรียกว่าเดินต่อเท้าสูงจากพื้น  กีฬาขาโถกเถกเป็นการเลียนแบบการแก้ไขในชีวิตประจำวันของคนภาคอีสานสมัยก่อน  ซึ่งนิยมเลี้ยงสัตว์  เช่น  วัว  ควาย  เป็ด  ไก่  ไว้ใต้ถุนบ้าน  จึงมีขี้ควาย  ขี้เป็ด  ปะปนอยู่บนดิน  จึงใช้ขาไม้ต่อให้สูงขึ้น  เพื่อใช้เดินผ่าน
