ประชาคมอาเซียน ประกอบด้วย 3 ประชาคม

ประชาคมอาเซียน ประกอบด้วย 3 ประชาคมย่อย ซึ่งเปรียบเสมือนสามเสาหลักซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กัน ได้แก่
1) ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน มุ่งให้ประเทศในภูมิภาคอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสันติ มีระบบแก้ไขความขัดแย้งระหว่างกันได้ด้วยดี มีเสถียรภาพอย่างรอบด้าน มีกรอบความร่วมมือเพื่อรับมือกับภัยคุกคามความมั่นคงทั้งรูปแบบเดิมและรูปแบบใหม่ๆ เพื่อให้ประชาชนมีความปลอดภัยและมั่นคง

2) ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน มุ่งให้เกิดการรวมตัวกันทางเศรษฐกิจ และการอำนวยความสะดวกในการติดต่อค้าขายระหว่างกัน อันจะทำให้ภูมิภาคมีความเจริญมั่งคั่ง และสามารถแข่งขันกับภูมิภาคอื่นๆ ได้ เพื่อความอยู่ดีกินดีของประชาชนในประเทศอาเซียน

3) ประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน เพื่อให้ประชาชนแต่ละประเทศอาเซียนอยู่ร่วมกันภายใต้แนวคิดสังคมที่เอื้ออาทร มีสวัสดิการทางสังคมที่ดี และมีความมั่นคงทางสังคม
ในตอนนี้ ประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนกำลังอยู่ระหว่างการดำเนินการให้บรรลุการเป็นประชาคมอาเซียนภายในปีเป้าหมาย 2558 โดยในการประชุมสุดยอดอาเซียน ครั้งที่ 14 ที่ไทยจะเป็นเจ้าภาพในช่วงปลายเดือน ก.พ.2552 นี้ ผู้นำประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนจะรับรองแผนงานหรือแผนกิจกรรมการจัดตั้งประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน และประชาคมสังคมและวัฒนธรรมอาเซียน
