จากปี 2519 เป็นต้นมา การปลูกปาล์มน้ำมันในภาคใต้ก็เริ่มขยายตัวแพร่หลายมากขึ้น และส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นสวนปาล์มขนาดเล็กของเกษตรกรในนิคมสร้างตนเอง และนิคมสหกรณ์ต่างๆ ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2526 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีพระราชดำริให้คณะวิศวฯ มอ. ทำการออกแบบและพัฒนาโรงงานสกัดน้ำมันปาล์มขนาดเล็กสำหรับกลุ่มเกษตรกรสวนปาล์มรายย่อย โดยมี ผศ.ดร. ผาสุข กุลละวณิชย์ เป็นหัวหน้าโครงการฯ และได้ดำเนินการสนองพระราชดำริในปี 2527-2528 โดยเลือกใช้ระบบการทอดผลปาล์มแทนการอบด้วยไอน้ำ ซึ่งจะไม่มีน้ำเสียจาก
กระบวนการผลิต ต่อมาวันที่ 23 กันยายน 2528 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พร้อมด้วยสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพระบรมราชินีนาถ และสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาสยามบรมราชกุมารี ได้เสด็จทอดพระเนตรโรงงานสาธิตที่คณะวิศวฯ มอ. และทรงมีพระราชดำริให้ไปจัดสร้างโรงงานสกัดน้ำมันปาล์มขนาดเล็กให้กับกลุ่มเกษตรกรที่มีความพร้อม ซึ่งต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2529 ก็ได้ทำการสร้างโรงงานทดสอบขึ้นที่สหกรณ์นิคมอ่าวลึก จังหวัดกระบี่ และต่อมาก็มีการวิจัยพัฒนาปรับปรุงโรงงานมาโดยลำดับ จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2534 ก็ได้คิดประดิษฐ์กระบวนการสกัดน้ำมันปาล์มด้วยวิธีการทอดผลปาล์มภายใต้สภาพสุญญากาศเป็นผลสำเร็จ จนได้รับรางวัลชมเชยสิ่งประดิษฐ์คิดค้นที่เป็นประโยชน์แก่ประเทศชาติจากสำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติประจำปี 2536
