วัดพนัญเชิง เป็นวัดที่มีประวัติอันยาวนาน ก่อสร้างก่อนการสถาปนากรุงศรีอยุธยา และไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานที่แน่ชัดว่าใครเป็นผู้สร้าง ตามหนังสือพงศาวดารเหนือกล่าวว่า พระเจ้าสายน้ำผึ้งเป็นผู้สร้าง และพระราชทานนามว่า วัดเจ้าพระนางเชิง ได้สถาปนาพระพุทธรูปพุทธเจ้าพนัญเชิง เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 1867 ซึ่งก่อนพระเจ้าอู่ทองจะสถาปนากรุงศรีอยุธยาถึง 26 ปี [1]
