ประวัติศาสตร์

ชื่อประเทศไทย
คำว่า ไทย มีความหมายในภาษาไทยว่า อิสระ เสรีภาพ เดิมประเทศไทยใช้ชื่อ สยาม แต่ได้เปลี่ยนมาเป็นชื่อปัจจุบันเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2482 ตามประกาศรัฐนิยม ฉบับที่ 1 ของรัฐบาลจอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม ให้ใช้ชื่อ ประเทศ ประชาชน และสัญชาติว่า "ไทย" โดยในช่วงต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนกลับเป็นสยามเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2488 ในช่วงเปลี่ยนนายกรัฐมนตรี แต่ในที่สุดได้เปลี่ยนกลับมาชื่อไทยอีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2491 ซึ่งเป็นช่วงที่จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงครามเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีในสมัยต่อมา ช่วงแรกเปลี่ยนเฉพาะชื่อภาษาไทยเท่านั้น ชื่อภาษาฝรั่งเศส[1]และอังกฤษคงยังเป็น "Siam" อยู่จนกระทั่งเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2491 จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อภาษาฝรั่งเศสเป็น "Thaïlande" และภาษาอังกฤษเป็น "Thailand" อย่างในปัจจุบัน อย่างไรก็ตาม ชื่อ สยาม ยังเป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลายทั้งในและต่างประเทศ
การเมืองการปกครอง
เดิมประเทศไทยมีการปกครองระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ จนกระทั่งวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2475 คณะราษฎรได้ทำการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง ปัจจุบันประเทศไทยปกครองด้วยระบอบราชาธิปไตยภายใต้รัฐธรรมนูญ โดยแบ่งอำนาจเป็นสามฝ่าย ได้แก่ฝ่ายบริหาร ฝ่ายนิติบัญญัติ และ ฝ่ายตุลาการ โดยฝ่ายบริหารจะมีนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นหัวหน้าคณะรัฐบาลซึ่งมากจากการแต่งตั้ง ฝ่ายนิติบัญญัติ ได้แก่ สภานิติบัญญัติแห่งชาติซึ่งมาจากการแต่งตั้ง และฝ่ายตุลาการ คือ ศาลยุติธรรม ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญ และศาลปกครองซึ่งมาจากการปฏิรูปทางเมืองจึงเกิดศาลปกครองและศาลรัฐธรรมนูญ[2]
เขตการปกครอง
ประเทศไทยแบ่งเขตการบริหารออกเป็นราชการส่วนภูมิภาค ได้แก่จังหวัด 75 จังหวัด นอกจากนั้นยังมีองค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น ได้แก่ กรุงเทพมหานคร เมืองพัทยา องค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัด เทศบาล และองค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล ส่วนสุขาภิบาลนั้นถูกยกเลิกไปในปี พ.ศ. 2542
