ไลนัส พอลิง เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 28 กุมภาพันธ์ ค.ศ. 1901 ที่เมือง Portland รัฐ Oregon ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ไลนัส พอลิงเป็นนักเคมี มีความโดดเด่นเป็นพิเศษจากสิ่งที่สร้างให้แก่เคมีโครงสร้าง และประยุกต์ทฤษฎีควอนตัมกับเคมีโครงสร้าง ทั้งยังเป็นผู้อธิบายถึงพันธะทางเคมีระหว่างอะตอมและโมเลกุล รวมทั้งบ่งชี้โครงสร้างเกลียวอัลฟาของโปรตีน จนได้รับรางวัลโนเบลทั้งในสาขาเคมีและสันติภาพ ไลนัส พอลิง คือ บุคคลแรกที่ได้รับรางวัลโนเบล 2 รางวัลในสาขาที่ต่างกัน
