ต่อมา กองอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ ได้พิจารณาเห็นว่า เพื่อให้การจัดวนอุทยานแห่งนี้ เป็นไปตามหลักวิชาการ และเพื่อรักษาสภาพธรรมชาติอันสวยงามแห่งนี้ไว้ ควรสำรวจและปรับปรุงยกฐานะวนอุทยานน้ำตกตาดโตน ให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ จึงมีคำสั่งกรมป่าไม้ที่ 655/2518 ลงวันที่ 19 พฤษภาคม 2518 ให้นายไกรลาศ เทพสัมฤทธิ์พร นักวิชาการป่าไม้ 4 หัวหน้าวนอุทยานน้ำตกตาดโตน ดำเนินการสำรวจหาข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม พบว่า วนอุทยานน้ำตกตาดโตนมีสภาพป่าอุดมสมบูรณ์ มีน้ำตกที่สวยงามหลายแห่ง เหมาะสมจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ตามหนังสือวนอุทยานน้ำตกตาดโตน ที่ กษ 0808(ตน)/28 ลงวันที่ 28 พฤษภาคม 2519
