ปัจจัยทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ แม้ว่าเหตุผลทางเศรษฐกิจจะมีความสำคัญรองจากเหตุผลทางการเมืองในการที่อาเซียนรับเวียดนามเข้าเป็นสมาชิก แต่ก็ถือเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญที่มองข้ามไปไม่ได้ โดยความสัมพันธ์แบบทวิภาคีระหว่างเวียดนามกับประเทศในกลุ่มอาเซียนที่ได้พัฒนาไปอย่างรวดเร็วหลังจากเวียดนามประกาศถอนทหารออกจากกัมพูชา และได้ลงนามข้อตกลงสันติภาพที่กรุงปารีสในปี ค.ศ 1991 เหตุผลทางเศรษฐกิจที่เป็นแรงจูงใจให้เวียดนามต้องการเข้าเป็นสมาชิกอาเซียน

ปัจจัยทางด้านเศรษฐกิจของเวียดนาม
แบ่งได้เป็น 3 ประเด็นหลักคือ
2.1)    ความต้องการแรงสนับสนุนและความช่วยเหลือในการพัฒนาทางเศรษฐกิจ ทั้งทางตรงและทางอ้อมจากประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียน  โดยเวียดนามจะมีเร่งการพัฒนาของตนไปสู่ระบบเศรษฐกิจการตลาดที่วางอยู่บนหลักการของการแข่งขันได้ในที่สุด
2.2) ความต้องการมีส่วนร่วมในระบบเศรษฐกิจภูมิภาคเอเชีย-แปซิฟิก และองค์กรการค้าโลก เวียดนามได้ให้ความสำคัญสูงสุดต่อการเข้าร่วมในระบบเศรษฐกิจของภูมิภาคเอเชีย-แปซิฟิก (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation : APEC)  และระบบเศรษฐกิจของโลก ดังนั้น การเป็นสมาชิกของอาเซียน นอกจากจะนำไปสู่การมีส่วนร่วมในเขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน (ASEAN Free Trade Area : AFTA)
2.3) ความต้องการผลประโยชน์จากลงทุนและการค้ากับประเทศอาเซียน ในฐานะของสมาชิกอาเซียน เวียดนามหวังที่จะได้รับประโยชน์จากการเพิ่มขึ้นของการค้าและการลงทุนกับประเทศอาเซียนทั้งหลาย  ซึ่งจะนำไปสู่การพัฒนาการผลิตของเวียดนาม

ปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจจะทำให้การพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจก่อให้เกิดความเจริญทางเศรษฐกิจอย่างสม่ำเสมอต่อเนื่องในระยะเวลาที่นานพอที่จะทำให้เกิดการปรับปรุงเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพทางสังคมโดยมุ่งเน้นเพื่อยกระดับการดำรงชีพของประเทศเวียดนามให้สูงขึ้น ก่อให้เกิดการเพิ่มขึ้นการพัฒนาในด้านเศรษฐกิจที่ยั่งยืน
