ตามพจนานุกรมฉบับบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2525 หมายความว่า หญิงในฐานะที่เป็นผู้ให้กำเนิดแก่ลูก, คำที่ลูกเรียกหญิงผู้ให้กำเนิดตน ซึ่งเป็นคำเรียกที่มีความหมายยิ่งใหญ่อยู่ตัว โดยเฉพาะกับผู้เป็นลูก ที่ได้แม่คอยดูแลมาตั้งแต่อยู่ในครรภ์ จนกระทั่งเติบใหญ่

ต่อมา รัฐบาลของจอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม ได้ประกาศให้วันที่ 12 สิงหาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันแม่แห่งชาติแทนวันที่ 15 เมษายนของทุกปี ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อทำให้วันดังกล่าวมีความสำคัญและความหมายมากขึ้น โดยเริ่มในปี พ.ศ. 2519 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
