จากการเก็บสถิติความเร็วลมที่ระดับความสูง 45 เมตร ของ กฟผ. เพื่อตรวจวัดศักยภาพพลังงานลมสำหรับผลิตไฟฟ้าทั่วประเทศมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2547 พบว่า ที่บริเวณอ่างพักน้ำตอนบนโรงไฟฟ้าลำตะคองชลภาวัฒนา ตำบลคลองไผ่ อำเภอสีคิ้ว จังหวัดนครราชสีมาแห่งนี้ มีศักยภาพพลังงานลมดีที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศไทย มีลมพัดถึง 2 ช่วง คือช่วงฤดูลมมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ (ระหว่างเดือนพฤศจิกายนถึงปลายเดือนมีนาคม) และลมมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ (ระหว่างเดือนพฤษภาคม ถึงกลางเดือนตุลาคม) มีความเร็วลมเฉลี่ยทั้งปีประมาณ 5-6 เมตรต่อวินาที ซึ่งสามารถนำมาผลิตไฟฟ้าได้

การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย (กฟผ.) จึงได้ดำเนินโครงการติดตั้งกังหันลม ขนาดกำลังผลิต 1,250 กิโลวัตต์์ จำนวน 2 ชุด รวมกำลังผลิต 2,500 กิโลวัตต์ ที่บริเวณอ่างพักน้ำตอนบนโรงไฟฟ้าลำตะคองชลภาวัฒนา ตำบลคลองไผ่ อำเภอสีคิ้ว จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ติดตั้งแล้วเสร็จพร้อมทั้งเชื่อมโยงเข้าสู่ระบบการจำหน่ายของการไฟฟ้าส่วนภูมิภาค (กฟภ.) ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2552 เป็นต้นมา
