เขื่อนสิรินธร เริ่มก่อสร้างในเดือนมิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2511 และมีการวางศิลาฤกษ์เมื่อวันที่ 2 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2512 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาติให้เชิญพระนามของ สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ขนานนาม เขื่อนว่า “สิรินธร” โดยตัวเขื่อน และระบบส่งไฟฟ้าระยะแรก สร้างเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2514
ในวันที่ 27 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2514 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดเขื่อนสิรินธร จากนั้นเมื่อวันที่ 7 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2515 สำนักงานคณะกรรมการนโยบายพลังงานแห่งชาติ ได้ส่งมอบเขื่อนสิรินธรให้อยู่ในความรับผิดชอบของการไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทย (กฟผ.) ดังเช่นปัจจุบัน


เขื่อนสิรินธร เป็นเขื่อนหินถมแกนดินเหนียว

นอกประโยชน์ในการผลิตกำลังไฟฟ้าแล้ว เขื่อนสิรินธรยังเป็นแหล่งประมง และแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่สำคัญของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี โดยบริเวณเขื่อนได้มีการจัดสร้าง "สวนสิรินธร" เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2533 โดยมีพิธีเปิดสวนอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 6 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2534 โดยสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จเป็นประธาน
