ศาลหลักเมืองสุราษฎร์ธานีกับสถาปัตยกรรมศรีวิชัย จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี เป็นเมืองเก่าแก่ที่มีร่องรอยทางประวัติศาสตร์แห่งอาณาจักรศรีวิชัยมีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาแต่โบราณกาลจนถึงปัจจุบัน และ มีแนวโน้มว่าในอนาคตดินแดนแห่งนี้จะเป็นศูนย์กลางความเจริญทางด้านวัตถุและจิตใจในบริเวณภาคใต้ตอนบน
การก่อสร้างศาลหลักเมืองสุราษฎร์ธานี เพื่อน้อมเกล้าฯ ถวายเป็นพระราชสักการะและเฉลิมพระเกียรติเนื่องในมหามงคลวโรกาสที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 9 ทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติ ครบ 50 ปี ในวันที่ 9 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2539 และเพื่อความเป็นศิริมงคล เป็นหลักชัยละมิ่งขวัญรวมทั้งเป็นศูนย์รวมจิตใจของประชาชนชาวจังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี คณะช่างจากกรมศิลปากรเป็นผู้ออกแบบก่อสร้าง ตามศิลปกรรมศรีวิชัยด้วยการเน้นรูปลักษณ์ที่เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมท้องถิ่นเดิมที่ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจาก ลังกา ชวา และ เขมรสมกลมกลืนกัน เพื่อแสดงถึงความแข็งแรงมั่นคงและเป็นปึกแผ่น

องค์หลักเมืองประกอบด้วยยอดเสาหลักเมืองบรรจงแกะสลักจากไม้ราชพฤกษ์ เป็นพระพักตร์ของพระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวรสี่หน้า หันพระพักตร์ไปทั้งสี่ทิศเหมือนการแกะสลักพระพรหมสี่หน้าไว้ตามยอดหลักเมืองทั่วๆไป และตรงมวยมวยพระเกศาสลักเป็นพระพุทธรูปปางสมาธิ พร้อมกับลงรักปิดทองอย่างวิจิตรสวยงาม ส่วนตัวเสาหลักเมืองเกาะสลักจากไม้ราชพฤกษ์เช่นเดียวกัน มีลักษณะเป็นเสากลมโตมีลักษณะสูง 108 นิ้ว เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 20 นิ้ว สำหรับรูปทรงของศาลนั้นได้สร้างเป็นทรงสี่เหลี่ยมจตุรมุขย่อมุม มณฑปสร้างเป็นเจดีย์องค์ประธาน มียอดฉัตร 5 ชั้น ถัดลงมาเป็นหลังคาซ้อนเป็นชั้นมณฑปลดหลั่นลงมาจำนวน 4 ชั้น แต่ละชั้นมีเจดีย์องค์บริวาร หลังคามีฐานสี่เหลี่ยมขนาดสูง 5.10 เมตร กว้าง 2.10 เมตร ตกแต่งด้วยลายปูนปั้นแบบศรีวิชัย ทาสีทอง ปั้นก่อบัวลวดลายบนกลีบขนุนทั้ง 4 ด้าน และได้อัญเชิญเครื่องหมายตราสัญลักษณ์ฉลองราชสมบัติครบ 50 พรรษา ประดับไว้ทั้ง 4 ด้าน

เจดีย์บริวาร 4 องค์ ที่ก่อสร้างจากฐานสุดจะหมายถึงพรหมวิหาร 4 อันได้แก่ เมตตา กรุณา มุทิตา และ อุเบกขา ในความหมายทางลัทธิศาสนาพราหมณ์ จะหมายถึงพระพรหม ที่นำมาออกแบบเป็นประติมากรรมสลักไว้บริเวณยอดเสาหลักเมืองทั้ง 4 ทิศ

ต่อมานายแสง พิมลศรี ซึ่งมีบุตรจำนวน 6 คน ได้มอบที่ดินแปลงนี้อยู่ในความรู้แลของนายช้วย พิมลศรี บุตรชาย ซึ่งต่อมาย้ายครอบครัวไปอยู่ที่อื่นและนายเอม ( ไม่ทราบนามสกุล ) ซึ่งเป็นหลานของนายแสง พิมลศรี ได้เข้ามาจับจองที่ดินแปลงนี้ จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2450 ต่อมานายเอมได้ขายที่ดินแปลงนี้ แก่นายหวาน – นางเหมือน รำเพย บ้านเดิมอยู่ บ้านพรุสยาม ( ปัจจุบันอยู่ที่ หมู่ที่ 2 ตำบลพรุไทย อำเภอบ้านตาขุน จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี) เป็นเงินจำนวน 10 บาท
