กรมชลประทานได้ประกาศวันเริ่มโครงการอ่างเก็บน้ำคลองหลวง ตั้งแต่วันที่ 15 พฤษภาคม 2552
ตามที่คณะรัฐมนตรีได้เห็นชอบ เมื่อวันที่ 28 เมษายน 2552 ให้กรมชลประทานดำเนินโครงการ โดยอ่างเก็บน้ำคลองหลวง
