ฉะเชิงเทราเป็นจังหวัดหนึ่งในภาคกลาง มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 5,351 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นดินแดนเก่าแก่ซึ่งไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานชัดเจนว่าถือกำเนิดขึ้นเมื่อไร แต่จากการสำรวจและขุดค้นตามแหล่งอารยธรรมสำคัญโดยนักโบราณคดี ทำให้รู้ว่าพื้นที่นี้เคยเป็นที่อยู่ของมนุษย์ยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ในช่วงหลายพันปีที่ผ่านมา สันนิษฐานว่า ในยุคนั้น ฉะเชิงเทราเป็นดินแดนสำคัญแห่งหนึ่งทางด้านชายฝั่งทะเลตะวันตะวันออก
ชื่อฉะเชิงเทราปรากฏเป็นครั้งแรกในพระราชพงศาวดารสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา โดยเป็นเมืองเก่าแก่ตั้งแต่รัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถ มีฐานะเป็นเมืองจัตวา หรือหัวเมืองชั้นใน จนถึงรัชสมัยของสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช พระองค์ทรงใช้ฉะเชิงเทราเป็นที่รวบรวมไพร่พล นอกจากนี้ยังทรงใช้เป็นเมืองหน้าด่านอีกด้วย
ครั้นล่วงมาถึงสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ ฉะเชิงเทราก็เป็นเมืองที่ขึ้นอยู่ในสังกัดกรมพระกลาโหม และย้ายมาอยู่ในสังกัดกรมมหาดไทย จนกระทั่งถึงรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงระบบการปกครองแผ่นดิน ฉะเชิงเทราจึงเปลี่ยนฐานะเป็นเมืองเมืองหนึ่งในมณฑลปราจีนบุรี ร่วมกับเมืองนครนายก พนมสารคาม พนัสนิคม ชลบุรี และบางละมุง จนถึง พ.ศ. 2459 ก็ได้ยกรับการฐานะขึ้นเป็นจังหวัด
จากยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ล่วงเลยมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ ฉะเชิงเทรานับว่าเป็นดินแดนแห่งการเพาะปลูก เพราะมีดินตะกอนอันสมบูรณ์ด้วยแร่ธาตุ รวมทั้งอุดมด้วยแหล่งน้ำ โดยมีแม่น้ำบางปะกงเป็นดั่งเส้นเลือดใหญ่ของจังหวัด ชาวบ้านส่วนใหญ่ตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่ริมแม่น้ำและริมลำคลองสาขาย่อย โดยประกอบอาชีพเกษตรกรรมเป็นส่วนใหญ่
สำหรับชื่อ “ฉะเชิงเทรา” นั้น สันนิษฐานว่าเพี้ยนมาจากภาษาเขมร ซึ่งเคยมีอำนาจการปกครองในพื้นที่นี้ในช่วงอาณาจักรลพบุรี โดยมาจากคำว่า “สตรึงเตรา” แปลว่า “คลองลึก” แต่ก็มีข้อสันนิษฐานอื่นว่า น่าจะมาจากชื่อเมือง “แสงเซรา” หรือ “แซงเซา” ที่สมเด็จพระบรมราชาธิราชแห่งอาณาจักรอยุธยา เสด็จไปตีเมืองได้ตามที่ปรากฏในพระราชพงศาวดารฉบับหลวงประเสริฐ
