มวยทะเลเป็นกีฬาพื้นเมืองภาคใต้สมัยเก่า เล่นแพร่หลายในแทบทุกจังหวัด เช่น พัทลุง สุราษฎร์ธานี และสงขลา เป็นต้น ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานมาเริ่มเล่นตั้งแต่เมื่อใด แต่พบว่ามีการเล่นกันในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๙ โดยจัดให้เป็นกีฬาที่มีการสอนแก่นักเรียนนายร้อยในสมัยนั้น (โรงเรียนนายร้อยพระจุลจอมเกล้า, ๒๕๑๐: ๓๙ – ๔๐) สันนิษฐานว่ามีการดัดแปลงมากจากการชดมวยไทยที่เป็นที่นิยมกันมานานแล้ว นำมาเล่นกันบริเวณชายหาดหรือในทะเล แล้วชกต่อยกันให้ฝ่ายใดตกทะเล จึงเรียกว่า “มวยทะเล” (สร้อย ภูมิไชยา, สัมภาษณ์ ๑๘ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๒๖) ทหารเรือนิยมจัดให้มีการแข่งขันกีฬามวยทะเล เนื่องจากได้ฝึกการต่อสู้และยังฝึกการว่ายน้ำเอาตัวรอดด้วย ชาวบ้านภาคใต้นิยมเล่นสนุกสนานในเทศกาลตรุษสงกรานต์หรืองานรื่นเริงต่างๆ เล่นกันเฉพาะในหมู่ผู้ชายทั้งผู้ใหญ่และเด็ก ในปัจจุบันยังมีการเล่นกีฬาชนิดนี้อยู่ทั่วไป
