อุทยานแห่งชาติภูผาเทิบ เดิมชื่อ อุทยานแห่งชาติมุกดาหาร เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 59 ของประเทศไทยมีเนื้อที่ 48.5 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือ 30,312.5 ไร่ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่อำเภอเมืองมุกดาหาร และอำเภอดอนตาล จังหวัดมุกดาหาร ห่างจากตัวเมืองประมาณ 17 กิโลเมตร โดยใช้เส้นทางมุกดาหาร-ดอนตาล(ทางหลวงหมายเลข 2034) แยกเข้าทางขวามืออีกประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร จะถึงที่ทำการอุทยานฯ หรือ นั่งรถจากกรุงเทพฯไปลงที่สถานีขนส่งมุกดาหาร และต่อรถสองแถว (สีเหลือง) ค่าโดยสารประมาณ 5 บาทไปลงที่ตลาดพรเพชร แล้วต่อรถสองแถวสายมุกดาหาร – ดอนตาล ค่าโดยสารประมาณ 10 บาท ลงที่ปากทางเข้าอุทยานแห่งชาติภูผาเทิบ หรือบอกให้คนขับรถเข้าไปส่งที่อุทยานฯก็ได้ ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นภูเขาหินทราย ประกอบด้วยเทือกเขาน้อยใหญ่หลายลูกติดต่อกัน แบบลูกคลื่นและเป็นส่วนปลายสุดของเทือกเขาภูพาน เทือกเขาเหล่านี้วางตัวในลักษณะแนวเหนือ-ใต้ขนานและห่างจากชายฝั่งแม่น้ำโขงประมาณ 4 กิโลเมตร ภายในอุทยานฯประกอบด้วยภูหมากยาง ภูมโน ภูโปร่ง ภูรัง ภูจอมนาง ภูหมากมี่ ภูผาเทิบ ภูนางหงส์ ภูถ้ำพระ ภูหลักเสและยอดเขาสูงสุดคือ ยอดภูจอมศรี มีความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ 170-420 เมตร สภาพป่าส่วนใหญ่เป็นป่าไม้เต็งรัง และป่าเบญจพรรณ และยังเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของลำห้วยหลายสาย เช่น ห้วยตาเหลือก ห้วยสิงห์ ห้วยเรือ ห้วยมะเล ห้วยช้างชน เป็นต้น แถบบริเวณเชิงเขาเป็นป่าไผ่ขึ้นสลับเป็นแนว หลายบริเวณเป็นหน้าผาสูงและลานหินกว้าง มีหินรูปร่างแปลกๆ มากมาย
