นครราชสีมาเป็นเมืองโบราณในราชอาณาจักรไทยเมืองหนึ่ง เป็นเมืองใหญ่ สมัยก่อนมีฐานะเป็นเมืองเจ้าพระยามหานคร เทียบเท่าเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชในภาคใต้ และเมืองพิษณุโลกทางภาคเหนือ
