ประกอบไปด้วย หมู่เกาะใหญ่น้อย จำนวนถึง 51 เกาะ มีเนื้อที่ทั้งเกาะและทะเลรวมกันประมาณ 1,490 ตรกม. แบ่งเป็นพื้นที่ทางทะเล 1,260 ตรกม. พื้นที่เกาะ 230 ตรกม. จัดแบ่งออกเป็น หมู่เกาะใหญ่ 2 หมู่เกาะ คือ หมู่เกาะ ตะรุเตา และหมู่เกาะอาดัง-ราวี เกาะสำคัญขนาดใหญ่มี 7 เกาะ ได้แก่ เกาะตะรุเตา เกาะอาดัง เกาะราวี เกาะดง เกาะหลีเป๊ะ เกาะเหล็ก เกาะกลาง เกาะที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดคือ เกาะตะรุเตา ได้รับการประกาศ เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติเมื่อวันที่ 19 เมษายน 2517
