ประวัติ
ประเทศบรูไนเริ่มมีธงชาติของตนเองใช้อย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 29 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2502 ซึ่งขณะนั้นบรูไนยังเป็นรัฐในอารักขาของอังกฤษ (สหราชอาณาจักร) ต่อมาภายหลังจึงได้รับเอกราชเมื่อวันที่ 1 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2527 ภายใต้ชื่อประเทศ "บรูไนดารุสซาลาม" (แปลว่า นครแห่งสันติสุข) ลักษณะของธงชาตินั้นเป็นธงสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าพื้นสีเหลือง ภายในมีแถบสีขาวและสีดำวางพาดตามแนวทแยงมุม จากมุมบนด้านคันธงไปยังมุมล่างด้านปลายธง โดยสีขาวอยู่บน สีดำอยู่ล่าง กลางธงนั้นมีภาพตราแผ่นดินของบรูไน
เดิมรัฐสุลต่านบรูไนใช้ธงสีเหลืองเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของรัฐมาโดยตลอดแม้อยู่ในช่วงของการเป็นรัฐในอารักขาของสหราชอาณาจักร ต่อมาจึงได้มีการเพิ่มแถบสีคาดสีขาว-ดำ ลงบนธงในปี พ.ศ. 2449 เพื่อให้เกิดความแตกต่างจากธงอื่นที่ใช้สีเหลืองชัดเจนขึ้น และได้มีการแก้ไขแบบธงอีกครั้งโดยการเพิ่มรูปตราแผ่นดินลงบนกลางธงในปี พ.ศ. 2509 ดังลักษณะที่ปรากฏในปัจจุบันนี้
