มื่อเอ่ยชื่อจังหวัดสตูล ทุกคนต้องรู้จักเกาะตะรุเตา เนื่องจากเป็นเกาะที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังในประวัติศาสตร์ เมื่อสมัย 60 ปีที่แล้ว เกาะแห่งนี้เคยใช้เป็นสถานที่กักกันนักโทษเป็นที่มาของโจรสลัดตะรุเตาที่อื้อฉาว ล่วงมาเมื่อวันที่ 20 เมษายน 2517 ได้ประกาศจัดตั้งเป็น “ อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตา” เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 8 ถือเป็นอุทยานทางทะเลแห่งแรกและใหญ่ที่สุดของประเทศไทย ต่อมาองค์การยูเนสโกได้ประกาศให้อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตาเป็น “มรดกแห่งอาเซียน” ( ASEAN Heritage Parks and Reserves ) เป็นสถานที่ที่ต้องช่วยกันดูแลรักษา เพื่อให้ผู้คนทั่วโลกมาศึกษาและเยี่ยมชมตลอดไป

อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตาตั้งอยู่ในหมู่ที่ 7 ตำบลเกาะสาหร่าย อำเภอเมืองสตูล บริเวณช่องแคบ มะละกาในทะเลอันดามัน มหาสมุทรอินเดีย ระยะห่างจากตัวจังหวัด ประมาณ 40 กิโลเมตร และห่างจากเกาะลังกาวีของประเทศมาเลเซีย ประมาณ 5 กิโลเมตร อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตามีพื้นที่ทั้งหมด 1,490 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือประมาณ 931,250.00 ไร่ แบ่งเป็นพื้นที่ทะเล 763,625.00 ไร่ และพื้นที่บกและป่าไม้ 167,625.00 ไร่ ประกอบด้วยหมู่เกาะสำคัญ 2 หมู่เกาะ ได้แก่ หมู่เกาะตะรุเตา กับ หมู่เกาะอาดัง – ราวี มีเกาะใหญ่น้อยจำนวน 51 เกาะ กระจายกันอยู่ในทะเลอันดามัน
