พระราชประวัติ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ
12 สิงหาคม วันแม่แห่งชาติ
ทรงพระราชสมภพ เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่ 12 สิงหาคม พุทธศักราช 2475 ที่บ้านพลเอกเจ้าพระยาวงศานุประพันธ์ (หม่อมราชวงศ์สท้าน สนิทวงศ์) ผู้เป็นบิดาของหม่อมหลวงบัว ณ บ้านเลขที่ 1808 ถนนพระรามหก ตำบลวังใหม่ อำเภอปทุมวัน จังหวัดพระนคร ขณะนั้น เป็นระยะที่ประเทศเพิ่งเปลี่ยนแปลง การปกครองจากระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์ เป็นระบอบประชาธิปไตย ก่อนหน้านั้นพระบิดาของพระองค์ ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งผู้ช่วยเสนาธิการทหารบก มียศเป็นพันเอกหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคล กิติยากร
หลังจากเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองในวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน พุทธศักราช 2475 หม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลต้องทรงออกจากราชการทหาร โดยรัฐบาลแต่งตั้งให้ไปรับราชการในตำแหน่งเลขานุการเอก ประจำสถานทูตสยาม ณ กรุงวอชิงตัน ดี.ซี. ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ส่วนหม่อมหลวงบัว ยังคงพำนักอยู่ในประเทศไทย จนให้กำเนิดหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ แล้วจึงเดินทางไปสมทบมอบหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ให้อยู่ในความดูแลของเจ้าพระยาวงศา นุประพันธ์และท้าววนิดา พิจาริณี ผู้เป็นบิดาและมารดาของหม่อมหลวงบัว
หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ ต้องอยู่ห่างไกลพระบิดามารดาตั้งแต่อายุเพียงน้อยนิด บางคราวต้องระหกระเหินไปต่างจังหวัดกับพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ตามเหตุการณ์ผันผวนทางการเมือง เช่น ในปีพุทธศักราช 2476 หม่อมเจ้าอัปษรสมาน กิติยากร พระมารดาของหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคล ได้ทรงรับนัดดาตามเสด็จพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวไปสงขลาด้วย
ปลายปีพุทธศักราช 2477 หม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคล ทรงลาออกจากราชการ กลับประเทศไทยพร้อมครอบครัว อันมีหม่อมราชวงศ์กัลยาณกิติ์บุตรคนโตและ หม่อมราชวงศ์บุษบาบุตรีคนเล็กผู้เกิดที่สหรัฐอเมริกาแล้วมารับหม่อมราชวงศ์ อดุลยกิติ์บุตรคนรอง กับหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์จากหม่อมเจ้าอัปษรสมาน กลับมาอยู่รวมกันที่ตำหนักซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ถนนกรุงเกษม ปากคลองผดุงกรุงเกษม ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์เริ่มเรียนชั้นอนุบาลที่โรงเรียนราชินี ปากคลองตลาดในพุทธศักราช 2479 แต่เมื่อสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพาลุกลามมาถึงประเทศไทย จังหวัดพระนครถูกโจมตีทางอากาศบ่อย ๆ ทำให้การเดินทางไม่สะดวกและปลอดภัย หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ จึงต้องย้ายไป โรงเรียนที่โรงเรียนเซ็นต์ฟรังซิสซาเวียร์คอนแวนต์ และในเวลาต่อมาได้ตั้งใจที่จะเป็นนักเปียโนผู้มีชื่อเสียง

ระหว่างที่อยู่ในประเทศอังกฤษ หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ตั้งใจเรียนเปียโน ภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาฝรั่งเศสกับครูพิเศษ แต่อยู่อังกฤษได้ไม่นานหม่อมเจ้านักขัตร มงคลก็ ทรงย้ายไป ประเทศเดนมาร์กและ ประเทศฝรั่งเศสตามลำดับ ระหว่างนี้หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ยังคงตั้งใจเรียนเปียโนอย่างขะมักเขม้น เพื่อเตรียมสอบเข้าวิทยาลัยการดนตรีที่มีชื่อเสียงของกรุงปารีส พุทธศักราช 2491 ขณะที่หม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลและครอบครัวอยู่ในปารีส ได้รับเสด็จสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ซึ่งโปรดเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทอดพระเนตรโรงงานทำรถยนต์ในกรุงปารีสอยู่เสมอ จนเป็นที่คุ้นเคยต่อพระยุคลบาทและต้องพระราชอัธยาศัย ฉะนั้นเมื่อสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงประสบอุปัทวเหตุทางรถยนต์ในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ต้องประทับรักษาพระองค์ในสถานพยาบาล จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมให้หม่อมหลวงบัวพาบุตรีทั้งสอง คือหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์และหม่อมราชวงศ์บุษบาเข้าเฝ้าทูลละอองพระบาทเยี่ยมอาการเป็นประจำ จนพระอาการประชวรทุเลาลง เสด็จกลับพระตำหนักได้ สมเด็จพระราชชนนีได้รับสั่งขอให้หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์อยู่ศึกษาต่อที่เมืองโลซานในโรงเรียนประจำ Riante Rive ซึ่งเป็นโรงเรียนที่มีชื่อเสียงในการสอนวิชาพิเศษแก่กุลสตรี คือ ภาษา ศิลปะ ดนตรี ประวัติวรรณคดี และประวัติศาสตร์
ต่อมาอีก 1 ปี ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลและครอบครัวมาเฝ้าฯ แล้วสมเด็จพระราชชนนีรับสั่งขอหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ต่อหม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคล และประกอบพระราชพิธีหมั้นอย่างเงียบ ๆ ในวันที่ 19 กรกฎาคม พุทธศักราช 2492 ทรงใช้พระธำมรงค์ที่สมเด็จพระราชบิดา ทรงหมั้นสมเด็จพระราชชนนีเป็นพระธำมรงค์หมั้น แล้วคงให้หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ศึกษาต่อไป จนเสด็จนิวัตพระนคร จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ตามเสด็จกลับมาถวายพระเพลิงพระบรมศพพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล ในเดือนมีนาคม พุทธศักราช 2493
วันที่ 28 เมษายน พุทธศักราช 2493 มีพระราชพิธีราชาภิเษกสมรส ณ วังสระปทุม สมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า ทรงเป็นประธานพระราชทานน้ำพระพุทธมนต์และเทพมนต์ สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชและหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ ได้ทรงจดทะเบียนสมรสตามกฎหมาย และในวันนั้นสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ ทรงสถาปนาหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์เป็นสมเด็จพระราชินี
วันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม พุทธศักราช 2493 เป็นวันพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษก สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงรับเฉลิมพระบรมนามาภิไธยว่า “พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว” และทรงสถาปนาเฉลิมพระยศสมเด็จพระราชินีเป็น “สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินี”
