วันฉัตรมงคล หมายถึง พระราชพิธีฉลองพระเศวตฉัตรสิริราชกกุธภัณฑ์ พระแสงประจำรัชกาล ทำในวันซึ่งตรงกับวันบรมราชาภิเษกเสวยราชสมบัติตามราชประเพณี (ความหมาย ตาม พจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๕)

ความสำคัญ
วันฉัตรมงคล เป็นวันที่ระลึกในการครบรอบปีที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงรับพระบรมราชาภิเษกเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์แห่งประเทศไทยโดยสมบูรณ์ คือ พระองค์ได้ขึ้นครองราชสมบัติสืบต่อจากสมเด็จพระบรมเชษฐาธิราช พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล เมื่อวันที่ 9 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2489 แล้วเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงศึกษาอยู่ ณ ทวีปยุโรป จนกระทั่งทรงบรรลุนิติภาวะแล้วจึงได้เสด็จนิวัติในประเทศไทย และรัฐบาลไทยได้น้อมเกล้า ฯ จักพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกถวาย เมื่อวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2493 เหล่าพสกนิกรชาวไทย ได้ถือเอาวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม ของทุกปี เป็นวันฉัตรมงคลรำลึก

ประวัติความเป็นมา พระราชพิธีฉัตรมงคลรัชกาลปัจจุบัน ตรงกับวันที่ ๕ พฤษภาคม ๒๔๙๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ ทรงกระทำพระราชพิธีพระบรมราชาภิเษกเสด็จขึ้นครองราชย์เป็นลำดับที่ ๙ แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี จึงถือว่าวันที่ ๕ พฤษภาคม ของทุกปีเป็นวันมงคลสมัย พสกนิกรและรัฐจึงได้ร่วมกันจัดพระราชพิธีขึ้นเรียกว่า รัฐพิธีฉัตรมงคล บ้างก็เรียก พระราชพิธีฉัตรมงคล

          พระราชพิธีฉัตรมงคล เริ่มมีขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระ จอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๔ โดยทรงมีพระดำริว่า วันที่พระองค์ได้เสด็จเถลิงถวัลยราช สมบัติบรมราชาภิเษกนั้น เป็นมหามงคลสมัยซึ่งประเทศทั้งปวงที่มีพระเจ้าแผ่นดินย่อม นับถือวันนั้นเป็นวันนักขัตฤกษ์มงคลกาล แต่ในกรุงสยามมิได้มีการนักขัตฤกษ์อันใด ครั้ง นี้วันบรมราชาภิเษกของพระองค์ตรงกับสมัยที่เจ้าพนักงานได้สมโภชเครื่องราชูปโภคแต่ เดิมมา ควรที่จะมีการสมโภชพระมหาเศวตฉัตรให้เป็นสวัสดิมงคลแก่ราชสมบัติ จึงได้ ทรงพระราชดำริจัดการพระราชกุศลพระราชทานชื่อว่า ฉัตรมงคล นี้ขึ้น การพระราชพิธี ฉัตรมงคลเมื่อครั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงริเริ่มนั้น มีสวดมนต์เลี้ยงพระ เวียนเทียนสมโภชพระมหาเศวตฉัตร ที่พระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท และพระที่นั่งไพศาล ทักษิณ
ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๕ มีเพิ่มการพระราชทานเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์จุลจอมเกล้า อาลักษณ์อ่านคำประกาศ ยิงปืนใหญ่เฉลิมพระเกียรติ ชุมนุมถวายบังคมพระบรมรูปสมเด็จพระบูรพมหากษัตริยาธิราช เวียนเทียนสมโภชเครื่องราชกกุธภัณฑ์
