จนได้รับแต่งตั้งเป็น นายพันตรี หลวงศักดิ์ศัลยาวุธ ดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บังคับกองพันพิเศษ กองพลที่ ๕ ก่อนได้รับการคัดเลือกให้ไปเรียนวิชาการบินในประเทศฝรั่งเศส เมื่อวันที่ ๑๘ มกราคม พ.ศ.๒๔๕๔ ได้รับยศ “นายพันตรี” และได้รับพระราชทานเลื่อนยศเป็น “นายพันโท” เมื่อวันที่ ๒๙ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๕๖ ขณะเข้ารับการศึกษาวิชาการบิน

พ.ศ.๒๔๕๗ กระทรวงกลาโหมจัดตั้งกองบินทหารบก มี นายพันโทพระเฉลิมอากาศเป็นผู้บังคับการ ท่านแรก
วันที่ ๒๒ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๖๐ ประเทศไทยประกาศเข้าร่วมสงครามโลกครั้งที่ ๑ ท่านได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็น ผู้บังคับการกองทหารอาสานำกำลังพล ๑,๒๕๐ นาย ตามคำสั่งวันที่ ๑๙ มิถุนายน พ.ศ.๒๔๖๑ เดินทางไปราชการสงคราม ในยุโรป ที่ประเทศฝรั่งเศส จนสิ้นสงครามด้วยชัยชนะร่วมกับฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตร ได้รับพระราชทานเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ อันมีศักดิ์ รามาธิบดีชั้นที่ ๓ กลับถึงกรุงเทพฯ ในวันที่ ๒๑ กันยายน พ.ศ.๒๔๖๒ และได้รับพระราชทานเหรียญดุษฎีมาลา
๑๙ มีนาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๖๑ เป็นเจ้ากรมอากาศยานทหารบก ท่านแรก
๗ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๖๓ ได้รับพระราชทานเลื่อนบรรดาศักดิ์เป็น พระยาเฉลิมอากาศ
๑ สิงหาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๗๕ ลาออกจากราชการเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง
