ประเพณีปอยส่างลอง หรือประเพณีบรรพชาสามเณร ตามประเพณีชาวไทยใหญ่ ซึ่งถือว่าได้กุศลแรงกว่าการอุปสมบทพระภิกษุ จึงจัดอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ช่วงเดือน มีนาคม เมษายน เด็กที่บรรพชาเรียกว่า ส่างลงอ จะโกนผมแต่ไม่โกนคิ้ว แล้วแต่งกายประดับประดาด้วยเครื่องประดับอันมีค่า เช่น สวมสร้อย กำไล แหวน และใช้ผ้าโพกศรีษะแบบพม่า สวมถุงเท้ายาว นุ่งโสร่ง ทาแป้งขาว เขียนคิ้วทาปาก ทั้งนี้เชื่อกันว่าพระพุทธเจ้ามีฐานะเป็นกษัตริย์ ยังสละกิเลสได้ การประดับประดาแสดงว่ามีฐานะดี ก็สละกิเลสไปบวชได้เช่นกัน ถ้าไม่มีม้า ก็จะขี่คอ ซึ่งเรียกว่า พี่เลี้ย หรือตะแป่ส่างลอง แห่ไปตามถนนสายต่างๆ เพื่อไปขอคารวะและขอพรจากผู้แก่ผู้เฒ่าตามบ้านเรือนต่างๆ โดยระหว่างการแห่นั้น มีการประโคมฆ้องกลอง เต้นรำกันอย่างสนุกสนานครึกครื้น
