ความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองหลายปีที่ผ่านมาทำให้หลายฝ่ายทั้งรัฐบาล ฝ่ายค้านและภาคประชาชนต่างพยายามเสนอแนะทางออกที่เหมาะสมให้กับ ประเทศไทย ความพยายามนั้นทำให้เกิดวาทกรรมใหม่ทางการเมืองไทยที่เรียกว่า ‘การปรองดอง’ หรือ ‘การปรองดองแห่งชาติ’ ที่หลายฝ่ายเชื่อว่า จะสามารถลดปัญหาความขัดแย้งและความรุนแรงทางการเมืองได้ โดยทางสถาบันพระปกเกล้าได้เผยแพร่งานวิจัยถึงทางออกและแนวทางการปรองดองของไทย ซึ่งอาศัยการวิเคราะห์จากประสบการณ์ในประเทศต่าง ๆ ที่เคยประสบปัญหาความขัดแย้ง ผ่านคำถามหลักที่ว่า “อะไรคือรากเหง้าของความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองที่เป็นอยู่ในปัจจุบัน และมีปัจจัย/กระบวนการใดบ้างที่ทำ ให้สังคมกลับมาอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสันติ”ทั้งนี้ ผลการวิจัยดังกล่าวสรุปว่า ปัญหาหลัก 3 ประการของการแก้ปัญหาความขัดแย้งในปัจจุบัน ไดแก่ 1) การแบ่งฝักแบ่งฝ่ายในสังคม 2) การขาดการร่วมมือแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นกัน และ 3) การใช้พลังมวลชนเพื่อต่อสู้ทางการเมือง
