ในปี พ.ศ. 2389 เออร์เบียง เลอ เวอร์ริเยร์ (Urbain Le Verrier) คำนวณว่า ต้องมีดาวเคราะห์ดวงหนึ่งรบกวนการโคจรของดาวยูเรนัส จนเมื่อวันที่ 23 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2389 โจฮันน์ จี. กาลเล (Johann G. Galle) นักดาราศาสตร์ชาวเยอรมันแห่งหอดูดาวเบอร์ลิน ได้ค้นพบดาวเนปจูน ในตำแหน่งใกล้เคียงกับผลการคำนวณดังกล่าว
