แนวคิด
1.อริยสัจ 4 เป็นความจริงอันประเสริฐ ทำให้เห็นพระอริยบุคคลเป็นธรรมที่สำคัญ เพราะเป็นธรรมที่ทำให้ตรัสรู้เป็นพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า
2.อริยสัจ 4 ประกอบด้วย ทุกข์ คือสภาพที่ทนได้ยาก สมุทัย สาเหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ นิโรธความดับทุกข์ มรรค หนทางให้ถึงความดับทุกข์



วัตถุประสงค์
1.เพื่อให้นักศึกษาเข้าใจและสามารถบอกความหมายและความสำคัญของอริยสัจ 4 ได้
2.เพื่อให้นักศึกษาเข้าใจและสามารถอธิบายลักษณะของอริยสัจ 4 แต่ละประการได้
เราอาจจะเคยศึกษาอริยสัจ 4 ในระดับพื้นฐานมาแล้ว ซึ่งอาจจะเข้าใจว่า อริยสัจ 4 เป็นหลักธรรมที่เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะตรัสรู้ และเป็นหลักธรรมที่สอนเรื่องของเหตุและผล สามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้ แต่สำหรับอริยสัจ 4 ในวิปัสสนาภูมิถือว่ามีความสำคัญมาก เพราะอยู่ในฐานะเป็นธรรมที่ทำให้เกิดการหลุดพ้น เข้าถึงความเป็นอริยบุคคล กระบวนการพัฒนาปัญญาที่เรียกว่า ภาวนามยปัญญาจะเกิดการยกระดับจิตของมนุษย์ได้ก็โดยอาศัยอริยสัจ 4 นี้เอง อริยสัจ 4 จึงเป็นเหมือนเครื่องมือในวิปัสสนาเพื่อทำให้กิจแห่งความเป็นพระอริยบุคคลให้สมบูรณ์ ดังจะได้กล่าวในรายละเอียดต่อไป
1. ความหมายของอริยสัจ 4
อริยสัจ แปลว่า ความจริงอันประเสริฐ ความจริงของพระอริยะ ความจริงที่ทำบุคคลผู้เข้าถึงให้เป็นอริยชน และความจริงอันทำให้บุคคลผู้ปฏิบัติห่างไกลจากข้าศึก
1.เป็นความจริงอันประเสริฐ เพราะเป็นความจริงที่เป็นจริงอยู่เสมอ ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงแปรผันเป็นอย่างอื่น หรือกลับตรงกันข้าม เช่น ชีวิตเจืออยู่ด้วยทุกข์ ตัณหา(ความทะยานอยาก ต่างๆ) เป็นเหตุแห่งทุกข์นานาประการ ความดับกิเลสตัณหาเป็นความดับทุกข์ และการปฏิบัติชอบในรูปแบบต่างๆ เป็นมรรคไปสู่ความดับทุกข์ สิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นความจริงที่สามารถพิสูจน์ได้ตลอดมาตั้งแต่บรรพกาลจวบจนกระทั่งปัจจุบัน ด้วยเหตุนี้ ในการแสดงอริยสัจครั้งแรกนั้น พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้ทรงยืนยันว่า ธรรมจักรที่พระองค์ทรงหมุนไปแล้วนี้ ใครๆ จะหมุนกลับ ไม่ได้(อปฺปฏิวตฺติยํ) คือ ใครจะกล่าวคัดค้านว่า ไม่เป็นจริงหาสำเร็จไม่
2.เป็นความจริงของพระอริยะ หมายความว่า พระอริยะเจ้าท่านมีความเห็นอย่างนี้ มีความเข้าใจในเรื่องชีวิตอย่างนี้ตรงกัน ไม่ขัดแย้งกัน คือ เห็นว่าชีวิตเจืออยู่ด้วยทุกข์ ตัณหาเป็นเหตุให้เกิดทุกข์ การดับกิเลสได้เป็นความดับทุกข์ และมรรคมีองค์ 8 เป็นทางไปสู่ความดับทุกข์ ได้จริง ซึ่งความเห็นความเข้าใจอย่างนี้ อาจสวนทางกับความเห็นของปุถุชนส่วนมากก็ได้
3.เป็นความจริงที่ทำบุคคลผู้เข้าถึงให้เป็นอริยชน แม้เดิมทีเดียวเป็นปุถุชน แต่เมื่อมา รู้แจ้งในอริยสัจ 4 ครบถ้วนบริบูรณ์ทุกประการแล้ว ย่อมแปรสภาพจากปุถุชนเป็นอริยชนไปทันที เหมือนคนจนเมื่อมีทรัพย์ขึ้นก็กลายเป็นเศรษฐีไป
4.เป็นความจริงอันทำให้บุคคลผู้ปฏิบัติตามห่างไกลจากข้าศึก ในทางพระพุทธศาสนานั้น ข้าศึกมี 2 อย่าง คือ ข้าศึกภายนอก อันได้แก่ ผู้มุ่งร้ายต่อเรา และข้าศึกภายใน คือ กิเลสซึ่งเป็นข้าศึกอันร้ายกาจของบุคคล โรครบกวนกายให้ไร้ความสงบสุขอย่างไร กิเลสก็รบกวนใจให้ปราศจากความสงบสุขอย่างนั้น บรรดาข้าศึกทั้ง 2 อย่างนั้น กิเลสดูเหมือนจะเป็นข้าศึกที่ร้ายแรงกว่า เพราะรบกวนใจทุกวันและอิงอาศัยอยู่กับเรา หลอกล่อเราให้ลุ่มหลงแล้วทำร้ายในภายหลังผู้แจ่มแจ้งในอริยสัจย่อมสามารถกำจัดศัตรูภายในได้ ห่างไกลจากศัตรูภายใน คือ กิเลส ส่วนศัตรูภายนอกนั้นอย่างน้อยที่สุดก็เบาบางลง เพราะบุคคลเช่นนั้นย่อมไม่ก่อศัตรูกับใครไม่มีเวรมีภัยกับใคร จะมีก็แต่ผู้อื่นตั้งตนเป็นศัตรูกับท่านเอง แต่ท่านก็หาเป็นศัตรูด้วยไม่ ความรู้สึกว่าไม่มีศัตรูเป็นความปลอดโปร่งแจ่มใส เป็นความสุขที่เห็นได้ในปัจจุบัน1)
