ตั้งอยู่ที่บริเวณหน้าวัดปราสาทบูรพารา หมู่ที่ ๖ ตำบลจรเข้มาก อำเภอประโคนชัย จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ ห่างจากปราสาทพนมรุ้งมาทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ประมาณ ๘ กิโลเมตร

ปราสาทเมืองต่ำ เป็นศาสนสถานที่สร้างตามคติความเชื่อทางศาสนาฮินดู สันนิษฐานว่าคงสร้างขึ้นเพื่อถวายพระศิวะ มีลักษณะที่เป็นศาสนศถานประจำเมืองหรือประจำชุมชน จากการศึกษาทางโบราณคดีพบว่ามีการตั้งถิ่นฐานของชุมชนโบราณในละแวกนี้เป็นชุมชนขนาดใหญ่หลายชุมชน เช่น ชุมชนบ้านโคกเมือง โคกยายคาน โคกสลองตอง เป็นต้น โบราณวัตถุที่ขุดพบได้แก่ เครื่องมือ เครื่องใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน เช่นภาชนะดินเผาเนื้อดิน เครื่องถ้วยชามเคลือบน้ำตาลและเคลือบสีเขียว เป็นจำนวนมาก หลักฐานเหล่านี้แสดงถึงการตั้งถิ่นฐานของชุมชนที่มีอายุใกล้เคียงกับการสร้างปราสาท ซึ่งเป็นอิทธิพลศิลปะขอมแบบคลัง และแบบบาปวน กำหนดอายุประมาณครึ่งหลังพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๖ หรือราว ๑,๐๐๐ ปีมาแล้ว

เดิมปราสาทเมืองต่ำถูกทิ้งให้รกร้าง ชื่อ “เมืองต่ำ” สันนิษฐานว่า เป็นการกำหนดเรียกของชาวบ้านที่อพยพเข้ามาตั้งถิ่นฐานในละแวกนี้ภายหลังและคงเรียกเปรียบเทียบกับปราสาทพนมรุ้งที่อยู่บนยอดเขา ต่อมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๐-๒๕๓๙ กรมศิลปากรดำเนินการขุดแต่งและบูรณะปราสาทเมืองต่ำด้วยวิธีอนัสติโลซีส และกรมศิลปากรได้กราบทูลเชิญสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯสยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดปราสาทเมืองต่ำอย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ ๑๐ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๔๐ เนื่องในมหามงคลสมัยแห่งปีกาญจนาภิเษก ฉลองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๕๐ ปี พุทธศักราช ๒๕๓๙ แห่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลเดช

ศิลปะและสถาปัตยกรรม

ปราสาทเมืองต่ำ มีแผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า ขนาด ๑๒๐x๑๒๗ เมตร ก่อด้วยอิฐ หินทราย และศิลาแลง หันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันออก ประกอบด้วยอาคารสถาปัตยกรรมต่างๆ คือ

๑. กำแพงแก้วและซุ้มประตู กำแพงแก้วก่อด้วยศิลาแลง มีแผนผังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้า บนสันกำแพงประดับด้วยบราลี กึ่งกลางกำแพงแก้วมีซุ้มประตูหรือโคปุระขนาดใหญ่ ก่อด้วยหินทราย บริเวณห้องกลางมีลวดลายแกะสลักรูปดอกบัว ๘ กลีบ อาจหมายถึงการจำลองผังของจักรวาล อันประกอบด้วยทิศสำคัญ ๘ ทิศ หรืออาจบ่งบอกถึงความบริสุทธิ์ ความเป็นสิริมงคล
