ประวัติจังหวัดสงขลา
มีตำนานและเรื่องเล่าหลายเรื่องทั้งที่เป็นบันทึกและจากคำบอกเล่าถึงชื่อของเมืองสงขลาหลายประการด้วยกัน ซึ่งพอจะแจกแจงตามเอกสารที่มาได้ดังนี้

ชื่อเมืองสงขลาได้ปรากฏชื่อในพงศาวดารกรุงศรีอยุธยาในสมัยสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดีที่ 1 แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1893 ว่าเป็นเมืองประเทศราชในจำนวน 16 หัวเมือง และในเอกสารที่บันทึกโดยคนไทยอีกหลายฉบับที่ศึกษาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องเมืองสงขลาได้บันทึกประวัติของชื่อเมืองสงขลาว่า มาจากบันทึกของพ่อค้า และนักเดินเรือชาวอาหรับเปอร์เซีย ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 1993-2093 ในนามของเมือง "ซิงกูร์" หรือ "ซิงกอรา" แต่ในหนังสือประวัติศาสตร์เและการเมืองแห่งราชอาณาจักรสยามของนายนิโกลาส แซร์แวส เรียกชื่อเมืองสงขลาว่า "เมืองสิงขร" โดยได้สันนิษฐานว่าคำว่าสงขลาในปัจจุบันน่าจะเพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า "สิงหลา" หรือ "สิงขร" แปลว่าเมืองสิงห์ เนื่องมาจากการที่พ่อค้าชาวเปอร์เซียอินเดีย ตามที่ได้กล่าวมาข้างต้น ได้แล่นเรือผ่านมาค้าขายและแลเห็นเกาะหนู-เกาะแมว ซึ่งเมื่อมองจากทะเลเข้าหาฝั่งในระยะไกล ๆ จะเห็นปรากฏเป็นภาพคล้ายสิงห์สองตัวหมอบเฝ้าปากทางเข้าเมืองสงขลา ชาวอินเดียจึงเรียกเมืองสงขลาในสมัยนั้นว่า "เมืองสิงหลา" ส่วนคนไทยเรียกว่า "เมืองสทิง" เมื่อแขกมลายูเข้ามาค้าขายกับเมืองสิงหลา ก็จะออกเสียงเพี้ยนเป็น "เซ็งคอรา" เมื่อฝรั่งเข้ามาค้าขายก็เรียกตามมลายูแต่เสียงเพี้ยนเป็นสำเนียงฝรั่งคือ "ซิงกอรา" (Singora) จากนั้นคนไทยพื้นถิ่นเองก็ได้เรียกตามเสียงมลายูและฝรั่งเพี้ยนเป็นคำว่า "สงขลา" ดังปัจจุบัน
