เป็นการวิจัยเชิงพรรณนา (Descrittive research) เพื่อศึกษาความชุกของผู้สูงอายุที่มีภาวะสมองเสื่อมและเพื่อศึกษาระดับความสามารถในการปฏิบัติกิจวัตรประจำวันของสูงอายุที่มีภาวะสมองเสื่อม โดยใช้วิธีการสุ่มตัวอย่างอย่างง่าย (Simple random sampling) คือ จากกลุ่มประชากรผู้สูงอายุในเขตอำเภอเมือง จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ทั้งหมด จำนวน 32,162 คน จากการกำหนดขนาดตัวอย่างโดยใช้สูตรคำนวณของ ธีรวุฒิ เอกะกุล (2543) ที่กล่าวว่า ถ้าขนาดประชากรเป็นหลักหมื่น ควรใช้กลุ่มตัวอย่างอย่างน้อย 5% ดังนั้นจะได้ขนาดกลุ่มตัวอย่างเท่ากับ 1,610 คน เมื่อได้จำนวนกลุ่มตัวอย่างแล้ว ใช้วิธีการสุ่มอย่างง่าย (Simple random sampling) ด้วยวิธีการจับฉลาก ได้โรงพยาบาลส่งเสริมสุขภาพตำบลขนาย ตำบลบ้านเกาะ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดนครราชสีมา ซึ่งมีผู้สูงอายุในความรับผิดชอบทั้งหมด 1,377 คน จากการกำหนดขนาดตัวอย่างโดยใช้สูตรคำนวณของยามาเน่ คือถ้ากลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นหลักพัน ใช้กลุ่มตัวอย่าง 10% จะได้ขนาดกลุ่มตัวอย่างเท่ากับ 325 คน คณะผู้วิจัยทำการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลเป็นเวลา 1 เดือน จากเดือนตุลาคม 2557 ถึงเดือนพฤศจิกายน2557
