กฐิน หมายถึง ไม้สะดึงผ้าที่ยกนำมาถวายแด่พระสงฆ์ผู้อยู่จำพรรษาแล้วที่เรียกเช่นนี้เพราะเวลาจะตัดใช้สะดึงทาบ การที่นำผ้าไปถวายเรียกว่า ทอดกฐิน

การทอดกฐิน คือ การถวายผ้ากฐินแก่พระสงฆ์ผู้จำพรรษาอยู่วัดใดวัดหนึ่งหรือสถานที่ใดที่หนึ่งครบ 3 เดือน เพื่อให้พระได้มีผ้าเปลี่ยนใหม่การทอดกฐินจึงถือเป็นงานบุญที่ยิ่งใหญ่ ให้อานิสงส์แรง เพราะในปีหนึ่งแต่ละวัดจะรับกฐินได้เพียงครั้งเดียวเท่านั้น และจะต้องทำภายในเวลาที่กำหนดในการทอดกฐิน คือ 1 เดือนเท่านั้น โดยนับตั้งแต่วันออกพรรษา

ก่อนการทอดกฐินจะต้องมีการจองกฐินก่อนโดยจะต้องไปแจ้งความประสงค์แก่เจ้าอาวาสแล้วเขียนปิดประกาศให้ทราบ และเมื่อจองเรียบร้อยและได้หมายกำหนดการเรียบร้อยแล้ว เจ้าภาพจะต้องจัดเตรียมเครื่องกฐินซึ่งได้แก่ ผ้าจีวรหรือผ้าสบงหรือสังฆาฏิ ผืนใดผืนหนึ่ง และเครื่องบริขาร บริวารกฐิน ซึ่งอาจจะถวายเป็นปัจจัยสี่หรือถวายเป็นส่วนกลางเพื่อเป็นประโยชน์กับสงฆ์

พิธีทอดกฐิน จะมีพิธีสำคัญ 2 ขั้นตอน คือ

1.การถวายผ้ากฐิน เมื่อถึงเวลาที่พระสงฆ์มาพร้อมกันแล้ว เจ้าภาพก็จะอุ้มผ้ากฐินนั่งตรงต่อหน้าพระประธาน ตั้งนะโม 3 จบ หันมาทางพระสงฆ์แล้วกล่าวคำถวายผ้ากฐิน 3 จบ เช่นกัน เมื่อพระสงฆ์กล่าวรับ เจ้าภาพก็จะประเคนผ้าไตรกฐิน และเครื่องปัจจัยต่างๆ หลังจากนั้นพระสงฆ์จะลงความเห็นว่าพระรูปใดมีจีวรเก่าก็จะพร้อมในกันถวายให้พระรูปนั้นแล้วพระสงฆ์ก็จะสวด อนุโมทนา และเจ้าภาพก็จะกรวดน้ำเป็นอันเสร็จพิธี
