เริ่มต้นงานเขียนทั้งบทกวีและเรื่องสั้น ใช้นามปากกา "ไพฑูรย์ ธัญญา" มาตั้งแต่ ปี พ.ศ. 2521 พร้อม ๆ กับเพื่อนนักเขียนรุ่นใหม่ละแวกบ้านเกิด จนกลายมาเป็นที่มาของกลุ่มนาคร กลุ่มศิลปะ-วรรณกรรมสำคัญแห่งหัวเมืองปักษ์ใต้
