Blend membranes of a natural polymer, Sodium alginate (SA), with another natural polymer, Soya protein were prepared by solution casting method and cross linked with a mixture of glutaraldehyde and acetone. Sodium alginate was used as the base component in the blend system, whereas Soya protein concentration was varied from 10 to 50 wt%. The blend membranes were characterized by FTIR, SEM, DCS, TGA & XRD techniqes. FTIR results revealed the crosslinking between these membranes, DSC, TGA & SEM results confirmed the miscibility of these membranes. The variation of crystalline nature within the blend composition was studied from X-RD results. Membranes were used to study the Pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol at 300C. Membrane performance was assessed by calculating flux and selectivity. In the present work swelling study was also carried out through the analysis of Pervaporation results. The flux and selectivity values are higher for blend membranes compared to pure SA membrane. It is also noticed that as the content of Soya protein increases in the blend membrane composition The resulted membranes show brittle nature. Hence the studies were carried out at lower % of Soya protein content (i.e. up to 50 %) and these results show better flux & selectivity for this system in dehydration of isopropanol compared to pure SA.
