การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการศึกษาผลกระทบของการเปิดเสรีด้านการค้าและบริการในอาเซียนต่อประเทศไทยและแนวทางการพัฒนาผลกระทบ ซึ่งผลจากการศึกษาค้นคว้าพบว่าผลกระทบมีทั้งผลกระทบเชิงบวกและเชิงลบ ซึ่งก็คือเกิดการขยายช่องทางและโอกาสของสินค้าไทยในการเข้าถึงตลาดอาเซียน เกิดการเพิ่มโอกาสในการเพิ่มพูนการค้าระหว่างประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียน เกิดการลดต้นทุนการผลิตและเพิ่มทางเลือกให้ผู้ผลิตสามารถนำเข้าได้จากหลายแหล่งมากขึ้น แต่คู่แข่งขันในตลาดจะเพิ่มสูงขึ้นเช่นกัน และยังเกิดปัญหาสินค้นที่ไม่ได้มาตรฐานอีกด้วย และจากการเปิดเสรีการบริการทำให้ผู้ประกอบการไทยสามารถเข้าไปจัดตั้งกิจการ ให้บริการ ตลอดจนทำงานในประเทศสมาชิกอาเซียนสะดวกมากขึ้น ซึ่งยังเป็นแรงหนุนสำคัญที่ช่วยดึงดูดเงินลงทุนจากต่างประเทศ แต่การเปิดเสรีบางบริการที่เป็นสาขาที่มีความอ่อนไหว ซึ่งยังต้องใช้เงินลงทุนและเทคโนโลยีสูงจะต้องระมัดระวังเป็นพิเศษ
