                ดนตรี  เป็นศิลปะแห่งเสียงที่มนุษยชาติได้บรรจงสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นไว้   นับตั้งแต่ที่มนุษย์ได้ยินเสียงจากธรรมชาติและพยายามลอกเลียนเสียง   จนกระทั่งสร้างเสียงดนตรีขึ้นได้   เสียงดนตรีอยู่คู่กับมนุษย์มาโดยตลอดไม่ว่าชนชาติใด  ภาษาใด  ความเชื่อทางศาสนาใด   ดนตรีสามารถเข้าไปอยู่ในวิถีชีวิตและวัฒนธรรมความเป็นอยู่    อันแสดงถึงความเจริญทางจิตใจและอารยะธรรมของมนุษย์ชนชาติต่าง ๆ ได้เป็นอย่างดี

               

การศึกษาดนตรีในปัจจุบันได้รับการยอมรับให้เป็นวิชาหนึ่งที่มีความจำเป็นต่อการพัฒนาเด็ก     จากการค้นคว้าทางวิทยาศาสตร์พบว่า   ดนตรีมีผลต่อการพัฒนาสมองเด็ก เนื่องจากในสมองมีสารเคมีบางตัวที่มีผลต่อความรู้สึก   ความจำ  การเรียนรู้   ความคิดสร้างสรรค์  ฯลฯ   เราเรียกสารนี้ว่า   สารสื่อสัญญาณในสมอง (Neurotransmitter)   ได้แก่   สารเพื่อเกิดการกระตุ้น (excitatory) และสารเพื่อการยับยั้ง  (inhibitory)  สารเคมีทั้ง 2 ชุดนี้  ช่วยทำให้เด็กมีความตั้งใจ  สนใจการเรียนรู้  มีสมาธิ    สารเคมีนี้จะหลั่งมากเมื่อมีเด็กมีกิจกรรมที่ผ่อนคลาย  เช่น    การออกกำลังกาย   การได้รับคำชมเชย   การเล่นเป็นกลุ่ม   การร้องเพลง     การได้รับการสัมผัสที่อบอุ่น  การเล่นดนตรีและการเรียนศิลปะโดยไม่ถูกบังคับ    กระบวนการเรียนรู้ที่กระตุ้นให้ผู้เรียนมีความสุข  เกิดจากความสมดุลของสมองทั้งสองซีก           เมื่อสารเอนโดฟีน (endophine)  หลั่งออกมา  ทำให้เด็กมีความสุข  เป็นการเสริมสร้างประสบการณ์ของการเรียนรู้ที่มีคุณค่า    ถ้าสภาพแวดล้อมทางการเรียนรู้กระตุ้นให้เด็กมีความเครียด  กดดัน  แข่งขันเพื่อเอาชนะ  จะเป็นสารแอนดรีนาลีน (adrenalin)  ซึ่งเป็นการสร้างประสบการณ์เรียนรู้ที่ไม่พึงปรารถนา    และสร้างความทรงจำที่ไม่ดีให้กับเด็ก
