สำนักงานจัดหางาน ได้มีการพัฒนาการจัดต่อเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2475 ทางรัฐบาลได้ตราพระราชบัญญัติว่าด้วยสำนักจัดหางานขึ้น เนื่องจากภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ รัฐบาลได้เล็งเห็นความสำคัญของแรงงาน โดยให้มีการจัดตั้งสำนักงานจัดหางานขึ้น เพื่อทำหน้าที่จัดหางานให้แก่ประชาชนโดยไม่คิดค่าบริการ ซึ่งอยู่ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของกระทรวงมหาดไทย และมีการพัฒนาเรื่อยมา จนในปี 2535ได้มี พระราชบัญญัติปรับปรุงกระทรวง ทบวง กรม พ.ศ.ให้ยุบกรมแรงงาน กระทรวงมหาดไทย และจัดตั้งกรมพัฒนาฝีมือแรงงาน และกรมสวัสดิการและคุ้มครองแรงงาน ขึ้นในกรทรวงมหาดไทยขึ้น และต่อมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2536 พระราชบัญญัติรับปรุงกระทรวง ทบวง กรม พ.ศ. 2536 ให้จัดตั้งกระทรวงแรงงานและสวัสดิการและคุ้มครองแรงงาน กรมประชาสงเคราะห์ กรมพัฒนาฝีมือและแรงงาน กรมสวัสดิการและคุ้มครองแรงงาน สำนักงานประกันสังคม(พระราชบัญญัติโอนอำนาจหน้าที่และกิจการบริหารบางส่วนของกระทรวงมหาดไทยไปเป็นของกระทรวงแรงงานและสวัสดิการสังคม พ.ศ. 2536
