เหตุที่หมู่บ้านชื่อพนมทวนนั้นมีหลายเหตุผลด้วยกันแต่พอสรุปได้ว่า
1. เมื่อครั้งสงครามยุทธหัตถี ชาวบ้านทราบข่าวว่าจะมีกองทัพผ่านมาทางหมู่บ้าน จึงช่วยกันตีทวน (อาวุธ) เตรียมไว้
2. เป็นหมู่บ้านที่น้ำไหลทวน และลมพัดทวนจากทิศใต้ไปยังทิศเหนือ เคยได้ยินคนแก่ๆ เรียกกันว่า บ้านทวนน้ำทวนลม
3. เคยมีพระพุทธรูปไหลทวนน้ำขึ้นมาที่บ้านทวน ซึ่งปัจจุบันก็คือ พระประธานในพระอุโบสถ (หลังเก่า)

1) นานมาแล้วมีพระพุทธรูปลอยทวนน้ำขึ้นมาที่หมู่บ้านนี้
2) ทิศทางการไหลของน้ำและลมทวนจากใต้ขึ้นเหนือ (ซึ่งปัจจุบันก็ยังคงไหลในทิศทางนี้อยู่)
3) แต่เดิมชื่อ บ้านทวน เพราะมีพระพุทธรูปลอยน้ำขึ้นมาจึงเป็น พนมทวนซึ่งตั้งตามสภาพภูมิประเทศที่มีภูเขามาก (พนม หมายถึง ภูเขา)
4) เป็นแหล่งตีทวน เมื่อครั้งสงครามยุทธหัตถี
