ในสังคมไทยนั้น การใช้ชีวิตอยู่ร่วมกันฉันท์สามีภรรยาของคู่ชายหญิงที่ยังไม่ได้แต่งงานกันยังมีการศึกษาอย่างเป็นระบบค่อนข้างน้อยมาก แต่ก็เป็นลักษณะของการรับรู้จากสื่อต่างๆ เช่น หนังสือพิมพ์ รายการโทรทัศน์ เป็นต้น ซึ่งลักษณะการรับรู้ดังกล่าวจะเป็นในรูปแบบของ “การอยู่ก่อนแต่ง” ซึ่งเป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นมานานแล้วในสังคมไทยและมีแนวโน้มการเกิดปรากฏการณ์นี้สูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และจากการศึกษาพบว่า ในจำนวนคู่หญิงชายที่ใช้ชีวิตคู่ร่วมกัน เพียงร้อยละ 52 เท่านั้นที่มีการจดทะเบียนสมรส
