งหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนร่วมกับองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนและเทศบาลเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอนจัดงานประเพณีลอยกระทงสวรรค์ขึ้น ณ บริเวณวัดพระธาตุดอยกองมู ในระหว่างวันที่ 21-24 พ.ย. 2550 โดยประเพณีลอยกระทงสวรรค์นี้จัดเป็นสิ่งที่หาชมได้ยากและมีเพียงที่เดียวในประเทศไทย

วิสูตร บัวชุม หัวหน้าศูนย์ประสานงานการท่องเที่ยวจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน กล่าวถึงงานประเพณีลอยกระทงสวรรค์ของจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนว่า สำหรับในปีนี้ทางองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนร่วมกับเทศบาลเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอน

โดยงานประเพณีลอยกระทงทางน้ำที่บริเวณหนองจองคำ จะมีขึ้นในวันที่ 24 พ.ย. 2550 พร้อมกับงานลอยกระทงทั่วทุกภาค

ในวันงานจะมีขบวนแห่มากกว่าทุกปีถึง 25 ขบวน แต่หากนักท่องเที่ยวอยากสัมผัสความพิเศษการลอยกระทงที่แตกต่างก็สามารถมาที่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนได้ คือ ช่วงก่อนลอยกระทงตั้งแต่ 21-24 พ.ย.2550 นี้ ที่วัดพระธาตุดอยกองมูจะมีงานนมัสการพระธาตุดอยกองมู ไฮไลท์สำคัญของงานอยู่ที่ "การลอยกระทงสวรรค์"

การลอยกระทงสวรรค์นี้เกิดขึ้นจาก จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนมีพื้นที่ ที่เป็นแม่น้ำลำธารไม่มากนัก มีแม่น้ำปายซึ่งก็ตั้งอยู่นอกเมืองเกือบ10 กิโลเมตร ประชาชนอยากลอยกระทงก็ลอยได้ที่เดียว คือ ที่บริเวณ "หนองจองคำ"ซึ่งเป็นหนองน้ำสาธารณะ ชาวแม่ฮ่องสอนจึงเปลี่ยนวิธีการลอยกระทงโดยลอยขึ้นฟ้า

จุดปล่อยกระทงสวรรค์อยู่ที่ “วัดพระธาตุดอยกองมู” โดยทางวัดจะเตรียมกระทงซึ่งทำมาจากกระดาษสีเล็กๆ มีฐานเป็นโฟมเพราะมีความเบาจุดเทียนตรงกลาง ลักษณะของกระทงสวรรค์เป็นกระทงขนาดเล็กคล้ายโคมลอย แต่เล็กกว่า นำกระทงมาผูกติดกับลูกโป่งสวรรค์แล้วลอยขึ้น คาดว่ามีที่เดียวในประเทศไทย
