Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยBangkok Declaration หรือ(ASEAN Declaration เมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม 2510 โดยมีประเทศสมาชิก 5 ประเทศ ประกอบด้วย อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ และไทย
เพื่อส่งเสริมความร่วมมือทางด้านการเมือง เศรษฐกิจและสังคม ของประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ต่อมามีประเทศสมาชิกเพิ่มเติม ได้แก่ บรูไนดารุส-ซาลาม เวียดนาม ลาว เมียนมาร์ และกัมพูชา ตามลำดับ จึงทำให้ปัจจุบันอาเซียน มีสมาชิก 10 ประเทศ
