บรูไนเป็นเมืองเก่าแก่มีการปกครองโดยสุลต่าน ต่อมาได้ยอมเป็นรัฐอารักขาของอังกฤษ จนกระทั่งได้เอกราชสมบูรณ์ ไทยและบรูไนมีความสัมพันธ์กันมาก่อนที่จะได้รับเอกราช ซึ่งแยกความสัมพันธ์ในแต่ละด้านได้ดังนี้
