ทีมนักวิจัยจากคณะเภสัชศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ โดย รศ.ดร.ภก.สุรพล นธการกิจกุล และนักวิจัยจาก ศูนย์วิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์เชียงใหม่ , มหาวิทยาลัยแม่โจ้ , สำนักงาน ป.ป.ส. , องค์การสวนพฤกษศาสตร์สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ , มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวงและ บริษัท มินเทค แล็ปบอราทอรี่ จำกัด กรุงเทพฯ ได้ร่วมกันบูรณาการงานวิจัย กัญชงหรือเฮมพ์ ( Cannabis sativa L.var. sativa) ซึ่งเป็นพืชที่ได้รับการส่งเสริมเป็น พืชเศรษฐกิจบนพื้นที่สูงโดยสำนักงานคณะกรรมการพัฒนาการเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ (สศช.) พ.ศ. 2552-2556 ผ่าน มูลนิธิโครงการหลวง สถาบันวิจัยและพัฒนาพื้นที่สูง(องค์การมหาชน)

โดย รศ.ดร.ภก.สุรพล เผยว่า เนื่องจากพืชกัญชงถูกจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มเดียวกับกัญชา( Marijuana) ซึ่งเป็นพืชสารเสพติดให้โทษประเภทที่ 5 ตามพระราชบัญญัติยาเสพติดให้โทษ พ . ศ . 2522 คณะผู้วิจัยจึงได้นำเสนอแนวทางในการตรวจสอบทางเคมีและกายภาพโดยอาศัยปริมาณสารสำคัญ และประเมินวิธีมัลติเพล็กซ์พีซีอาร์สำหรับใช้ในการพิสูจน์เอกลักษณ์เพื่อแยกเฮมพ์ประเภทเสพติดและประเภทเส้นใยของพืชกัญชง ซึ่งงานวิจัยนี้ได้รับการสนับสนุนงบประมาณจากเงินรายได้คณะเภสัชศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ และสำนักงานป้องกันและปราบปรามสารเสพติด (ปปส.)
ถือเป็นการวิจัยต่อยอดจากพืชที่มีการดั้งเดิมในความเป็นวัฒนธรรมการแต่งกาย และถือเป็นหัตกรรมชุมชนที่นำเอาต้นกัญชงมาทำเป็นเส้นใยผ้า และนำมาถักทอ ตกแต่งลวดลายศิลป์ตามแบบฉบับของชน เผ่าต่างๆทางภาคเหนือ กัญชงจึงเป็นพืชดั้งเดิมที่มีการใช้ประโยชน์ตามประเพณีและรูปแบบชนเผ่า
