วัดอรุณราชวราราม เป็นวัดโบราณสร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกของฝั่งแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เดิมเรียกว่า “วัดมะกอก” ตามชื่อตำบลบางมะกอกซึ่งเป็นตำบลที่ตั้งวัด ภายหลังเปลี่ยนเป็น “วัดมะกอกนอก” เพราะมีวัดสร้างขึ้นใหม่ในตำบลเดียวกันแต่ อยู่ลึกเข้าไปในคงสมเด็จ พระยามหากษัตริย์ศึก (พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช) ได้ อัญเชิญพระพุทธรูปสำคัญ ๒ องค์นี้มาจากลาวในคราวที่เสด็จตีเมืองเวียงจันทร์ ได้ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๒โดยโปรดให้อัญเชิญ พระแก้วมรกตและพระบางขึ้นประดิษฐา
