แผ่นดินถล่ม (land slides) เป็นปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติของการสึกกร่อนชนิดหนึ่ง ที่ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายต่อบริเวณพื้นที่ที่เป็นเนินสูงหรือภูเขาที่มีความ ลาดชันมาก เนื่องจากขาดความสมดุลในการทรงตัวบริเวณดังกล่าว ทำให้เกิดการปรับตัวของพื้นดินต่อแรงดึงดูดของโลกและเกิดการเคลื่อนตัวของ องค์ประกอบธรณีวิทยาบริเวณนั้นจากที่สูงลงสู่ที่ต่ำ แผ่นดินถล่มมักเกิดในกรณีที่มีฝนตกหนักมากบริเวณภูเขาและภูเขานั้นอุ้มน้ำ ไว้จนเกิดการอิ่มตัว จนทำให้เกิดการพังทลาย (environnet , กรมส่งเสริมคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อม) สามารถแบ่งประเภทของดินถล่มตามตามลักษณะการเคลื่อนตัวได้ 3 ชนิดคือ

2) แผ่นดินถล่มที่เคลื่อนตัวอย่างรวดเร็วเรียกว่า Slide หรือ Flow เช่น Surficial Slide
3) แผ่นดินถล่มที่เคลื่อนตัวอย่างฉับพลัน เรียกว่า Fall Rock Fall
แผ่นดินถล่มในประเทศไทย ส่วนใหญ่มักเกิดภายหลังฝนตกหนักมากบริเวณภูเขาซึ่งเป็นต้นน้ำลำธารบริเวณตอน บนของประเทศ ซึ่งมีปัจจัยที่ส่งเสริมความรุนแรงของแผ่นดินถล่ม ดังนี้
