วัดโพธิ์ หรือนามทางราชการว่า วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม ราชวรมหาวิหาร เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอกและเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลที่ ๑ แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เนื่องจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ ให้สถาปนาวัดโพธารามวัดเก่าที่เมืองบางกอกครั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นวัดหลวงข้างพระบรมมหาราชวัง และที่ใต้พระแท่นประดิษฐานพระพุทธเทวปฏิมากร พระประธานในพระอุโบสถเป็นที่บรรจุพระบรมอัฐิของพระองค์ท่านไว้ด้วย

พระอารามหลวงแห่งนี้มีเนื้อที่ ๕๐ ไร่ ๓๘ ตารางวาอยู่ด้านทิศใต้ของพระบรมมหาราชวัง ทิศเหนือจดถนนท้ายวัง ทิศตะวันออกจดถนนสนามไชย ทิศใต้จดถนนเศรษฐการ ทิศตะวันตกจดถนนมหาราช มีถนนเชตุพน ขนาบด้วยกำแพงสูงสีขาวแบ่งเขตพุทธาวาสและสังฆาวาสชัดเจน

ใช้เวลา ๗ ปี ๕ เดือน ๒๘ วัน จึงแล้วเสร็จ และโปรดฯ ให้มีการฉลองเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๔๔ พระราชทานนามใหม่ว่า “วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาวาศ” ต่อมารัชกาลที่ ๔ ได้โปรดฯ ให้เปลี่ยนท้ายนามวัดเป็น "วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม"

ครั้นรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๓ ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งใหญ่ นานถึง ๑๖ ปี ๗ เดือน ขยายเขตพระอารามด้านใต้และตะวันตกคือ ส่วนที่เป็นพระวิหารพระพุทธไสยาสสวนมิสกวัน สถาปนาขึ้นใหม่ พระมณฑป ศาลาการเปรียญ และสระจระเข้บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ใหม่เป็นโบราณสถานในพระอารามหลวงที่ปรากฏอยู่ทุกวันนี้
